What makes a place unique? What is it about some spaces we visit that leaves them imprinted in our memory? We travel, we see new things, and even on a daily basis, we are bombarded with new discoveries, big and small. Yet just a handful of places claim a special spot in our psyche. But why?
Well, this is something we have been trying to find out through our creative work. Since the project of AZULIK was born, we have attempted to explore the fringes of architecture and design. We have experimented with multiple materials, shapes, and textures. We have tried to bring together distinct physical elements to create otherworldly ambiances that transport us to different realities. We have used multisensory stimuli to keep us profoundly engaged in the moment, with all our attention in the here and now.
However, no matter how unexpected, these elements would probably not be enough to remain in our memories without a philosophy to support them. If there is something we have learned is that craft must be paired with meaning. That every creation must have a purpose, and that it’s precisely that intention that grips not only our senses but our hearts.
At AZULIK, we hold our philosophy as a guiding beacon. The mission to reconnect people with themselves, with each other, and with their surroundings is based on three fundamental pillars -nature, art, and ancestral wisdom. These concepts merge to guide the intuitive creative process reflected in our spaces. Hopefully, these can influence our lives for the better
All our spaces and experiences carry this identity. SFER IK, for instance. Our museums and interdisciplinary creative spheres combine the organic architecture that has made them world-renowned with a clear mandate: to respect nature and encourage creative innovation through collaboration. The organic shapes of its galleries inspire artists to create pieces on site, using the space as part of their work. Simultaneously, the winding paths, changing textures, and light play makes us much more than visitors. We are immersed in the creative process itself and, through attention and interpretation, become co-creators of the art we are experiencing.
Jungle Cuisine, an experimental kitchen immersed in the jungle of AZULIK Uh May, follows a similar path. Here, the organic spaces that blend in with the tropical landscape host culinary experimentation. Our chefs combine ancient culinary traditions, local ingredients, and avant-garde techniques to produce medicinal food that is itself a form of art.
In short, to be truly memorable, spaces need a soul. We discover new places as much with our senses as we do with our minds and our spirits. Only when creation and design are given purpose by deeper meaning, will they remain with us and, with any luck, make our lives a little brighter long after we have left them.
